One thing is clear: a lot has to change in the healthcare sector. You can find out exactly what I think in this article.

1. inflation compensation 💰

2. less bureaucracy, be it in budget negotiations with the health insurance funds, audits by the medical service, etc. 🖇

3. consistent focus on the needs of patients and not on sectors (outpatient/inpatient) or professional groups.

4. reorganization of investment financing: modern technology, IT equipment and up-to-date infrastructure.💰

5. Uniform data standards: What is taken for granted in the supermarket must also be possible in the healthcare sector. 💻

6. IT systems must be interoperable💻

7. digital cross-sector patient file: Every attending physician must know medication, laboratory values, other findings, previous illnesses and previous treatments = data protection in the interests of the patient. 💻

8. unconditional commitment to quality in every hospital: my suggestion: quality management concepts such as the Magnet Recognition Program or accreditation according to Joint Commission standards should become mandatory.

9. make supply bottlenecks transparent for all products, not just medicines.

10 Fewer laws instead of more. Healthcare stakeholders are drowning in laws and regulations. ⚖

11. attractive working and training conditions for all professional groups.

12. new distribution of tasks between the professional groups: Away from doctor-centricity towards more interdisciplinarity across professional groups.

13. no money for dilapidated structures. But rather develop intelligent, innovative, regional concepts. And: Courage for the planned closure of hospitals.

14. personnel management competence must be anchored in hospital management.

15. rethink governance structures:
❓ Is the tripartite division into nursing, medical management and commercial management in the interests of patient orientation?
❓Does it make sense for university hospitals to be part of the Ministry of Science and all other hospitals to be part of the Ministry of Social Affairs or the Ministry of Health?
❓How should supervisory bodies be composed?

16. courageous politicians who drive intelligent change in the regions. It makes neither medical nor economic sense for mayors, district administrators and state politicians to hold on to “their” hospital.

17. attractive working conditions for doctors and pharmacists in private practice.

18. New concepts for emergency care.

19. strengthening the health literacy of the population.

20 Prevention must also play a much greater role in medical studies.

21. other incentive and funding systems: more money for talking medicine, for health coaching, not just rewarding those who do the most cases. 💰

22. excellent healthcare for citizens, whether in the countryside or in the city. ❤️

We talk about how artificial intelligence will change the work in purchasing and logistics.

Using Artificial Intelligence in Purchasing & Logistics

In March 2023, ChatGPT 4.0, a significantly enhanced version of the AI Chabot, was released.

Since then, interest in applications based on artificial intelligence (AI) has continued unabated.

One thing seems clear: the rapid development of AI will revolutionize the way we work. Today, however, much like when the first personal computers (PCs) were sold in 1974, we hardly know the real, disruptive potential of this technology!

There is great potential for application in medicine in particular AI enables computers to perform intellectual tasks that were previously reserved for humans.

The technology is based on self-learning algorithms that analyze large amounts of data to train and continuously improve models.

In the current issue of Klinik-Einkauf (issue 4 I August 2023), we give an overview of what AI can already do in purchasing & logistics today and what recommendations we have for you on how to deal with AI. Exclusively for the article in Klinik-Einkauf magazine, a special podcast episode HealthCareBrain with Dr. Kerstin Stachel and Lennart Eltzholtz on AI in purchasing & logistics will be released on 8.9.2023.

AI in purchasing and logistics: fields of application and benefits

In purchasing and logistics, AI opens up numerous opportunities for optimization and increased efficiency.

Some application examples are:

Make predictions about demand and requirements

Analysis of delivery times, transport costs and stock levels

Suggestions for improving supply chains

Potential savings in purchasing can be identified by processing prices, supplier information and contracts.

Identify risks early by analyzing data such as supplier ratings, payment delays, and quality issues

Specialized AI chatbots, like ChatGPT, help classify items and create bills of quantities.

However, it is important to emphasize that AI does not replace shoppers, but acts as a support to complete routine tasks more efficiently.

There are many books. But only a standard work for purchasing and logistics in hospitals.

AI will not replace human labor, but complement it. By looking at AI as a partner, we can expand our capabilities and fully exploit the potential of this disruptive technology.

Our recommendation:

Systematically deal with the new technologies.

Use them to increase your efficiency.

Uses them to complete monotonous tasks or routine activities.

Create policies in your hospital to maintain privacy and information security.

Not AI will do your job, but people who can handle AI!

Now it will take wizards 🧙‍♂️ to keep hospitals alive until the preemptive flat rate goes into effect in 2026.

Now it will take wizards 🧙‍♂️ to keep hospitals alive until the preemptive flat rate goes into effect in 2026. Here is a little insight into the magic school 😎

The hard magic: revenues up and costs down….

Revenues up!

🧚‍♂️ The magic formula: Quantity * Price 🧚‍♂️

in other words, more patients, more severe cases, higher prices.

Showstoppers:

🛑 Falling case numbers throughout Germany. So it’s whisking patients away from other hospitals.

🛑 More severe cases? Of course, if the technical equipment is available and the quality and structural specifications are met and, of course, there are enough patients and staff.

🛑 Higher prices: Prices are set by the legislator. No chance for the magicians. Or new professional field for all those who can steer politics in the right direction with the power of thought (or argument?!).

Costs down!

It’s simple: Conjure away personnel and material costs and conjure up a modern infrastructure with low energy and logistics costs…Conjure up tertiary services such as cleaning, food supply, …..günstiger

Showstoppers: inflation, rising wage and energy costs. Old buildings, structural requirements and intensive audits by health insurers. Minimum Wage….

But clearly our magician can do it (ok a little bit) and then comes the real magic…… 💫

Curtain up for a beautiful reporting system that enchants and is even more beautiful even better even better than the last versions…

an even better lecture on the exploits ….

🤥 Our magician hopes that the facade does not crumble, hopes that the outcries of doctors and nurses do not become even louder….

Yes staff shortage, closed beds, specialist for this and that is missing….true, but that can be overlooked or?

No! You can not!

✍ Adequate funding is needed for hospitals to remain on the grid now, not in 2026.

And of course, there is a broad consensus that fewer hospitals are needed. However, this must not be left to chance. Smart regional concepts must be developed under the leadership of the federal states.

✍ Hospitals need well-trained managers, real HR managers who understand how to guide people through change and create excellent working conditions.

💫 Who knows the magician, the conjurer, the expert or the scientist, 💫…

👉 that finally makes our politicians rethink,

👉 who ensures that bureaucracy moves out of hospitals and digitalization moves in?

👉 who makes the hospital what it should be again: a place where people are allowed to put their heart and soul into caring for patients?

If you / he meets them make sure that he is not chased away 😉
What do you/they think about how to proceed?
#hospitalmanagement

Supply bottlenecks are now part of everyday life in the healthcare sector. How do you deal with it?

Not available for delivery! In the meantime, we have (almost) gotten used to the fact that supply bottlenecks are part of everyday life.

A huge challenge for hospitals.

Meanwhile, more than 500 drugs are missing [Quelle BfArM]. Among them, critical ones such as antibiotics. Unimaginable? No, unfortunately sad reality.

💡But how do supply bottlenecks arise in the first place?
💡Are supply bottlenecks a healthcare phenomenon?
💡Medicinal products are well known, but what about medical devices?
💡What would have to be changed?
💡What can I do as a hospital purchaser when the supply bottleneck is there?
What percentage of your working time does supply bottleneck management now take up? What solutions do you propose? We are looking forward to your comments!

This makes it all the more important to know which skills are required
in order to be successful. In the first chapter you find helpful informations about the competencies of a buyer and in the second chapter, those of a logistician.

Moderation and negotiation

A deep understanding of medical processes and products as This can be achieved by building relationships with experts inside and outside
the organization and being a good communicator. Moderation in the hospital context means to succeed in bringing together the know-how of all experts without wasting the time of high paid experts. We give
tips on how to run successful workshops. Its eveident that negotiating is a core task. You negotiate with suppliers about prices, with doctors and nurses about which product is used and with your management about how goals are set. We teach you how to negotiate properly?

You have clearly defined your goals for the negotiation! You think that is actually self-evident? Well you are rigght. Thats why we focus on the real challenges in negotiations together with Dr. Stefan Waßman. The core question is: How do you manage the relationships between people?
New Work and Sustainability

All you should know about purchasing, medicine and healthcare. Our guide to build a professional purchasing department: The pyramid! You reach the top of the pyramid with 10 steps.

In this section you will find all the basics you need to set up a purchasing department and understand the hospital world. We start with some important definitions of terms
and explain how to derive the purchasing strategy from the corporate strategy.
With the ten building blocks of our pyramid, we explain step by step how to set up professional purchasing. At the end of each building block of the pyramid, you will find a checklist. So you easily can check your maturity level and develop your individual to-do list. The pyramid chapter is your navigation system through this book for all issues about purchasing. In this chapter, we tell you a bit about our experience using some anecdotes. Why?

Have the courage and
perseverance to keep working towards the goal
, no matter what happens
.

Just remember: Big Change always provides you with incredible experiences. Take it with humor. Continue to solve the problems step by step. And be patient with your team. Change means for your team: acquiring new skills and changing habits. Accompany and support your team. We hope that you will smile from time to time while reading and realize that you are not alone with your problems.

The logistics in a hospital are complex, we give you an overview of the different areas and challenges and you can find out which topics we go into where in this book.
The healthcare sector is a unique universe full of secrets, magic and wonderful people. But also complex and full of technical terms. Only if you understand the basics of this
will you become a successful buyer or logistician.
Strategic purchasing has six core tasks. These are the
requirements analysis and management, the creation of service descriptions, procurement market analysis and the management of supplier relationships.

The purchasing department:

knows what is needed where, when and in what quality (demand analysis and control).

formulates the tender together with the doctors and nurses.

knows the procurement market and how to stimulate real competition.

manages supplier relations.

controls the needed quantities and ensures the best prices.

implements a controlling system to monitor internal and external developments.

The biggest challenge with so many suppliers and products: How do I set priorities?

In our view, the portfolio management system
has proven its worth here. With a portfolio strategy, you ensure that you do not lose sight of any supplier and you structure your negotiation strategy in such a way that it is easy for doctors and nursing staff to understand
. This facilitates cooperation.

Learn more about the different pricing strategies for different products. The deeper your understanding of pricing strategies ist, the more succesful your price negotiations will be. We give you numerous practical examples.

The chapter closes with a detailed practical example from the University Hospital in Bonn. We explain how we implemented a standardization project for the Heart Center and set up a project reporting system at
.
